A 100,000-ton press column, made of 30Cr2Ni2Mo forged material, with a raw weight of 97 tons. After precision processing, the outer diameter of the finished product is 800mm and the total length is 20,400mm.
30Cr2Ni2Mo (Chinese Standard Alloy Quenched & Tempered Steel)
Standard: GB/T 3077-2015, Unified Digital Code: A50300
It is a medium-carbon Cr-Ni-Mo quenched and tempered steel, featuring excellent hardenability, high strength combined with good toughness, strong impact resistance and fatigue resistance, suitable for heavy-section forgings.
Overseas equivalent grades: 30CrNiMo8 (1.6580), SNCM431 (JIS)
1. Chemical Composition (Mass Fraction %)

Mn: 0.50~0.80
Cr: 1.80~2.20
Ni: 1.80~2.20
Mo: 0.30~0.50
P ≤0.030; S ≤0.030; Cu ≤0.30
Alloy function: Cr and Ni greatly improve hardenability and toughness; Mo suppresses temper brittleness and enhances temper stability.
2. Standard Mechanical Properties after Quenching & Tempering (φ25 mm specimen, 850℃ oil quenching + tempering)
Tensile strength (Rm): ≥980 MPa
Yield strength (ReL): ≥835 MPa
Elongation (A): ≥10 %
Reduction of area (Z): ≥50 %
Impact energy KV₂: ≥71 J
Hardness after annealing / high temperature tempering delivery: ≤269 HBW
Note: Mechanical properties at the core will decrease for forgings with section thickness over 80 mm; safety factor shall be increased in design.
Critical diameter for oil quenching: approx. 120 mm. Forgings within φ150~250 mm can obtain relatively uniform microstructure, much better than 42CrMo.
3. Recommended Heat Treatment Process
Forging
Forging temperature range: 1180~850℃; Finish forging temperature ≥850℃; Slow cooling after forging (sand cooling / furnace cooling) to avoid cracking.
Quenching & Tempering (Conventional route)
Quenching: 850~870℃, sufficient holding time, oil cooling (quenched hardness HRC 46~52)
Tempering: 540~620℃, oil cooling / water cooling (avoid temper brittleness range; fast cooling after tempering to optimize toughness)
Temper at 540℃: High strength, hardness approx. 320~350 HB
Temper at 600℃: Balanced strength and toughness, hardness approx. 280~310 HB
Surface strengthening
Nitriding / Ion nitriding is applicable (ideal for gears, shaft journals). Carburizing is not recommended due to medium carbon content. Localized high-frequency induction hardening is available.
